Canggu, Bali
A five bedroom villa built on the meeting of two cultures. The American loft aesthetic, all open steel structure and extensive glazing, sits under an ancient Javanese roof whose curved metal soffits are the result of genuinely intricate craftsmanship. The result holds solidity and refinement at the same time, brutal in its materials and light in its movement.
The 111 sqm living room is conceived as a space of light and air. Towering glass walls illuminate a double height loft finished in dark Balinese surfaces, and those dark walls do not close the room in, they give it depth. The wide eaves of the Javanese roof shade the interior from direct sun and hold the temperature down without effort. Through the transparent walls the room merges with the tropical greenery, so the landscape becomes part of the house.
Every bedroom is different and every one is sized. Two sit on the ground floor with direct access to the garden and pool, three sit upstairs under a gable roof geometry unique to the second floor. Alongside them is an elevated lounge with bar seating and a games zone, opening to 180 degree views over the courtyard and the treetops, with sunsets framed by floor to ceiling glass.
A two level pool in an ancient style falls into a waterfall, and an oriental gazebo closes the composition. Its facade is shaped as the I Ching hexagram for Contemplation, with a yin yang sign on the wall reflecting the fusion of opposites that runs through the whole design. Dense tree planting around the double height void builds shade and a stable microclimate.
Dalung, Canggu, walking distance to the Batu Bolong and Berawa strip. Pepito, Zai Cafe, Topgym and Tonic Day Spa are close by, with La Brisa, Old Man's and Santanera a short ride away.
